2016 equinox pcv valve problems10/24/2022 ![]() ![]() #2016 EQUINOX PCV VALVE PROBLEMS SOFTWARE#While previous bulletins only offered software updates to reduce the recommended oil change intervals, TSB 15285C acknowledged oil consumption as an issue for the 2.4L Ecotec LAF engine due to worn out piston rings. TSB 15285C was released in March of 2016 and offered a real breakthrough towards addressing this problem. PCV plays an important role in engine efficiency, as it draws gas out of the crankcase, sending it through the intake manifold and back into the combustion chamber where it can be used.īut the Ecotec's PCV may be vacuuming more than just gas vapors as it also allegedly pulls oil off the valve trains and into the intake systems where it gets burned off. Faulty positive crankcase ventilation ( PCV) system ∞Īnd because that's not enough, it's widely believed that the Ecotec has a defect in its PCV system. This allows even more oil than normal to sneak past and faulty or worn rings into the combustion chamber. Ecotec oil control rings when the jets start sprayingīut the jets spray pressurized oil directly into the cylinders where frail oil rings are already struggling to keep oil in the crankcase. Less fricition means longer durability and increased performance. To make matters worse, the Ecotec engine uses oil cooling jets to reduce piston temperatures. Spray jets overload the already weak rings ∞ Those gaps allow oil to sneak past and burn up in the combustion chamber. GM opted to go with a thinner, low-tension oil ring for the 2.4L Ecotec engine.īut the oil control rings GM chose are way too thin and wear down quickly allowing gaps to form in the ring's coating. As the piston moves up and down, the oil control ring scrapes oil off the cylinder walls and prevents it from exiting the crankcase. That last responsibility falls on the oil control ring which is found at the bottom of the control ring stack. Oil control rings that are too thin ∞Įach piston has multiple control rings to maintain compression, transfer heat, and keep oil out of the combustion chamber. The new design relied heavily on low-tension oil control rings, spray jets, and a positive crankcase ventilation system to lower fricition, increase efficiency, and boost performance. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.GM switched to direct-injection for the 2.4L Ecotec engine in some 2010 models. ![]() This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.ĭealers are to perform a crankcase pressure check, and if required, remove the intake manifold and clear the PCV orifice. If this condition is not corrected, continued driving with engine noise and/or the engine oil pressure light illuminated may damage the engine. If the oil leak is ignored or not noticed, an engine clatter noise may be noticeable and/or the engine pressure warning light may illuminate. ![]() This condition may increase crankcase pressure leading to a rear crankshaft seal oil leak. The bulletin is titled 14882: Special Coverage Adjustment – Plugged PCV Orifice In Intake Manifold – 2010-2014 Buick Chevrolet GMC and is copy / pasted below:Ĭondition: Certain 2010-2013 Buick LaCrosse 2011-2013 Buick Regal 2012-2013 Buick Verano 2011-2013 Chevrolet Captiva 2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox 2013 Chevrolet Mailbu 2012-2013 Chevrolet Orlando 2010-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine (LAF, LEA or LUK) that have experienced high oil consumption may also experience a frozen and/or plugged PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system during cold weather operation. This is more good news because it means that if your car has fewer than 120,000 miles and your vehicle requires a PCV system repair, you can have that done at a GM dealership at no cost to you. I've found another warranty extension for the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system. I also wrote of a warranty extension for the catalytic converter for 2010-2011 Chevrolet Equinox's and GMC Terrains here. ![]() #2016 EQUINOX PCV VALVE PROBLEMS FREE#I wrote about a warranty extension for Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain owners here, where General Motors offered owners of 2010-2012 Equinox and Terrain owners a completely free warranty extension covering oil consumption issues. ![]()
